Teaching is one of the most valuable and rewarding careers a person could ever choose to pursue. A teacher plays an important role in student's lives, teaching them to become responsible, respectful citizens and to be curious about the world we live in. Teachers need to be determined to inspire each and every student that walks through their classroom door. They should teach students to be okay with making mistakes and learning from them, and to have self motivation to want to learn and do better each and every day. They should help students learn to think critically and to be confident with their work, as well as working collaboratively, sharing ideas and problem solving with peers. It is important for teachers to be enthusiastic about what they are doing and above all be caring and compassionate for all people in and outside of the classroom.
Students should be independent and help to create the styles of learning and teaching within the classroom, as well as the classroom environment. Each year, I work with students to create a set of classroom rules as well as the goals and achievements for hard work. By having students involved in this process, they feel a sense of ownership of the rules and our classroom. I work to build strong relationships with students and their families to minimize "behaviors" and have a passion of teaching students SEL skills to cope with upset feelings. By creating an environment where students feel they can communicate and trust their teacher & peers they will feel safe and will be able to better focus their attention towards their learning. When students trust you they will be interested in what you have to say and want to listen. They will let down their walls and feel free to make mistakes and learn from their mistakes in a safe environment.
Over my years of teaching I have learned and used many different curriculums & programs, and have learned to integrate content areas amongst each other, integrating the timeless or professional 6C skills and how to using technology and thematic teaching to elevate lessons and learning. I enjoy taking what we are learning using student interests to make more connections and excitement for the students about the content they are learning. Learning should be fun, hands on, authentic, purposeful and have meaning. Teaching students to set goals, work hard and have determination to learn anything they want and to help make an impact on our world.
I hold my students to high expectations and further build the classroom environment around these expectations. When you know in your heart that a student can so something, and you push them and encourage them to do something they have never done before, those students will be inspired by this determination and will try their best to make sure they achieve those high expectations. Setting achievable goals that a student must work hard for, will boost confidence and give students the feeling of pride and dedication.
To teach you must also have a love of learning. Teaching requires you to be a lifelong learner, always looking to improve lessons, making them interesting and relatable to the students. I have signed up to be a member of the National Science Teaching Association, Michigan Science Teaching Association, Michigan Reading Association and MACUL member. By being involved with these associations I have opened the door to lifelong learning. I enjoy reading educational books and attending Professional Developments to deepen my understanding of education and learning. I hope to continue my learning in the near future by obtaining my +30 specialty.
Giving back to the community will be very important in my classroom. When students are involved in their community they feel part of a whole and know that there is a whole community of people that care about them, as they should care in return. It is important to take care of where we live & the people that live there and to feel proud of where we come from.
Respect is something that should be taught and expected. A teacher must respect and celebrate each and every student for who they are, their backgrounds, experiences and cultural backgrounds and beliefs. It is important to teach and model what respect looks like and encourage positive behaviors in and outside of the classroom. I enjoy learning from other teachers and their experiences and educations as well. Collaboration among colleges is key to creating a successful school and positive culture for the building.
Technology plays a huge role in my classroom. There are endless ways of learning and communicating through the use of technology. It is important to teach students how to correctly use technology as a learning tool. Technology should be used daily to communicate with students, parents and other teachers.
When teaching it is important to be creative, patient, intelligent, hard working and determined. You must have an enjoyable and inspirational classroom for all students, parents and coworkers. The classroom environment must be safe and trusting for students to explore, try new things and learn to the best of their ability. Teaching is very rewarding to watch students learn to work hard, work collaboratively, and simply learn to enjoy learning.
